Sharbat Gula, known to much of the world simply as the "Afghan girl," received the keys to the home late last month in a ceremony led by Afghan government officials. It comes after three decades as a refugee in Pakistan and a tumultous last year back in Afghanistan.

Our camps are committed to creating a community that helps campers unlock their potential and discover the world while developing life skills. In our safe and supportive environment girls become active participants in the learning process as counselors guide them in not only having fun, but understanding the importance of how and what they are doing.

Thank you to all the girls, volunteers, and caregivers for all your hard work during cookie season. It was so fun to see the girls in action selling, learning, and having a great time. As you know, 100% of cookie proceeds stay in our council and we use a lot of the funds to cover camperships and memberships for girls.

Even in the face of the insurmountable odds Black girls and young women face in America, we are making tremendous strides and contributions in this country. The #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign invites us to imagine what 2030 can look like if we invest $1 billion in Black girls and young women over the next 10 years.

Black girls are facing significant barriers to educational achievement, economic and political equality, and are the recipients of deeply embedded racial and gender biases in the media, public policy, research, and philanthropy.

According to the Ms. Foundation landmark study on philanthropy, women and girls of color account for 0.5% of $66.9 billion by foundations, totaling just $5.48 per woman and girl of color in the United States.

The #1Billion4BlackGirls is a 10-year philanthropic initiative designed to invest in the brain trust, innovation, health, safety, education, artistic visions, research, and joy of Black girls and their families. The Black Girl Freedom Fund (BGFF) is an initiative of Grantmakers for Girls of Color (G4GC), and leads and hosts the organization of Black Girl Freedom Week.

The annual event will raise support to provide leadership experiences to more than 10,000 Girl Scouts across Monmouth and Ocean counties and ensure that every girl finds a place where she belongs and can access year-round Girl Scout programs.
