Virtually all effect parameters are also available as modulation destinations. This is especially useful on monophonic synth sounds. For example, apply an LFO to control reverb size or dry/wet, or velocity to control distortion amount. Many of these effects and modes were built just for Serum VST, so there are many unique effects to choose from, such as Hyper, which simulates (additional) unison amounts, or a dual-waveshaper which allows for a distortion you can morph between two separate wave shapes.

Both synthesizers are absolute power-houses & you can genuinely achieve incredible results with both. However, there are still some key selling points that will tip the scales one way or another depending on your preferences.

The user interface of both synths is practical. They are bright, colorful, and generally easy to read. Both are arranged logically according to the signal flow, with the oscillators on the left and filters on the right.

Really this is the biggest difference between the two. Serum is a dedicated wavetable synthesizer but Massive is closer to a general subtractive synth. Massive does not allow custom wavetables, but Serum has many features for crafting your own from scratch. The newer Massive X on the other hand is much more geared towards wavetables.

When it comes to effects, both synths have a wide array on offer. Massive also dedicates two windows to FX within the GUI, You have Insert FX & send FX which in turn offers more variety and acts as a pre-routed signal flow which can certainly help speed up your work-flow.

Both synths have really practical & great sounding FX, and this is probably the hardest category to call for either synth. However, for me, Serum just wins out again thanks to its incredible array of distortion tones and filters.

Serum is a wavetable synth software made by Xfer Records, that offers an immense range of high-quality creative capabilities. The plugin provides a variety of diverse tools, anywhere from creating unique sounding leads, sick pads, to wobbly, dubstep sounding bass, which makes it one of the most versatile VST plugins for modern style music production.

Serum does contain tons of features that other synths don't have, but its downside is that it uses a lot of CPU resources, so keep that in mind, before you go for the purchase.

The digital, spectral and vowel sections feature numerous complex and abstract wavetables which are perfect for crafting a wide range of modern leads and bass sounds, as well as pads, drones, and pretty much everything else you could want from a wavetable synth.

Similarly, the noise oscillator is more than just a standard white noise generator. It packs a wide variety of organic and abstract noises, as well as a large selection of clicks which can be used to enhance synthesized drums and percussive hits.

The raw power of Serum's native effects is downright impressive. I'm pretty sure nobody needs 13 different distortion types in a synthesizer, but it's there, whenever you might need it to spice up your sounds.

Why It Made The List: Kontakt by Native Instruments is one of our favorite samplers. It has TONS of libraries and modules built-in, including everything from strings and orchestral sounds, to drum kits, to synthesizers. As a sampler, Kontakt relies on recorded audio files for sound generation, which is different from other forms of synthesis. But these recordings sound amazing, as do the sounds you can produce with them. This is our go-to solution for real instrument sounds.

Why It Made The List: Arcade is an easy-to-use tool that gets you excellent sounds fast. Output's loop library is updated daily, meaning you'll always have new sources of inspiration every session. It's a total reimagining of synthesis (and music production) that is entirely different from other synths.

The past few years have seen exponential increases in the quality of soft synths, so much so that the aspect of "sound quality" isn't really even a consideration in the timeless debate between hardware and software synthesizers.

At this point it should be clear: Serum offers more features. But does it even sound good? Well, there are a lot of people claiming that Sylenth1 sounds notably warmer than a lot of other, digital synths do. So I put it to the test.

If you can grab a synth and make a fairly similar sound but 2x as fast, you would probably always use that synth. Granted that usually means certain synths are much faster at certain sounds and every synth has its strengths and weaknesses when it comes to workflow.

Wavetable is lightning fast. You can see most parameters on the first page, and in the expanded view you can see everything. The Matrix setting is really intuitive and fast to use. I find I can make a lot of sounds really fast without even questioning where a parameter is. And I am new to this synth! 041b061a72
