bfd3 represents an enormous amount of product refinement and quality improvement over the previous version.fxpansion has created a library of contents that many drummers will find invaluable for their work.this is the type of thing that sells software: the kind of quality we have come to expect from fxpansion since the original roland mt-32.
this expansion includes a full 32 tracks consisting of drum, percussion and cymbal kits. additional kits include the full bfd signature series, plus a wood kit for the recording custom.together, they contain 751 sampled sounds that can be re-sampled and modified for a full mix.
an excellent drum kit awaits you! i'm more used to the somewhat abrupt sound of a hitachi 909 tom, but the new bfd3 d40 kit is a revelation. geist not only keeps this approach, but also feels far more flexible than most competitors, too. as a result, i found it easier to go from a simple '2-4-5' 1/16th to cymbal crash in-time to subtle and subtle until it became one huge rhythm, rather than try to go from nothing to the full wah-wah tom in the same session. the rhythmic flex of geist also led to powerful performances: i burned-in the evil dead theme to a side-by-side toms. /bfd3 really makes for some lively performances.it's very effective at producing fat or sharp cymbals, too, which i find is important to my style. the envelope enabler is very useful in defining dynamics, with sweep and attack settings giving real-time shaping of the attack, as well as any decay.a c-mode sculpted slap cymbal deserves particular recognition. i can't do a 'perfect' hi-hat playing style - it's not in me - and c-mode's soft hi-hat has a real classic feel: a real gem!the addition of dynamic c-mode is new territory for this type of software, and i found it enabled a lot of high-frequency effects which i'd not have thought of. if these options are not to your liking, you can simply turn c-mode off. many 'on the fly' effects are perhaps overused, but a voice with a filter as sophisticated as geist's will usually be useful. c-mode is no replacement for a high-quality vca'd compressor, however: i found c-mode added extra resonance that pulled the drums too high on my mic preamp.geist now includes dry/wet controls in the mixer, although these are slightly awkward to access. a setting of 100% wet sounds more like normal practice, and to me, more realistic. some other small issues around controls were also evident, although i'd be more concerned by these if i had to use geist from scratch.
