This herb plant is prized for its medicinal properties. Used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Brahmi, issued to cure epilepsy and as an anti-aging cure all. It has been proven in contemporary medical studies as an effective treatment for improving memory, anxiety, stomach ailments and as a general tonic to fight stress. It's flavonoid and alkaloid chemical content make it a valuable medicinal herb.Brahmi plants practically grow themselves. Thriving under substandard conditions, the brahmi herb prefers consistently moist to wet soil and can even grow in water gardens. Try planting in a marshy area such as by a pond or river embankment. This creeping herb makes a great ground cover and blooms continuously from Spring to late Fall. Make sure to prune back every other year as Brahmi plants can be somewhat invasive if not kept in check. Our bacopa extract is the highest quality and most potent nature has to offer. Using a 100% natural extraction method the true essence of the whole herb is captured, therefore retaining all of its active and synergistic constituents in a truly potent holistic full spectrum form the way nature intended.**
Congratulations, you have found the most potent bacopa we have ever tested! This Bacopa monnieri extract came in at a whopping 24% Bacosides by UPLC!* You may think to yourself: "Wait a second, I have seen Bacopa monnieri extracts with a Bacoside content of over 50%?" It is true that there are bacopa extracts out there claiming to be over 50% bacosides. However, something that is not often discussed is that these testing values are most often obtained by UV-VIS, or ultraviolet-visual spectromic analysis. UV-VIS is an old methodology that not only measures the bacosides, but all other compounds that have a UV signal remotely similar to bacosides. This is because it does not separate the compounds before it measures them. It groups them all together. This means that it grossly inflates testing values. As a manufacturer, listing a bacoside content of over 50% is fantastic, as it will drive sales. However, the consumer is getting massively misled by those numbers. This is why we test our own Bacopa monnieri extract strictly by the much more accurate UPLC technology. Our in-house lab at Nootropics Depot has one of the most advanced UPLCs in the world from Waters, which runs at pressures up to 15,000 psi, which is over double the pressures run on a normal HPLC.* This allows us to not only more accurately measure botanical extracts, but do them much quicker and more efficiently. On top of that, we work diligently to validate and verify our methods and reference standards. What that means for you as a consumer is that you are getting testing numbers that are much more scientifically valid. Testing and validating this bacopa extract has been over half a year of work in our lab, along with working with a half dozen other labs from the United States and India. When we make a claim, we go above and beyond to ensure those claims are backed by proper science. When we say this is the most potent bacopa we have ever tested, we mean it!
To give some examples: the previous highest amount of Bacosides we have found is 12.5% (by UPLC). Compare this to our Bacopa monnieri extract at 24%, it is nearly double the bacosides of the next highest extract. On the flip side, we recently tested a Bacopa monnieri extract which claims to contain 55% bacosides (by UV-VIS), which really only contained 9% bacosides when tested via the more accurate UPLC testing methodology. This means that our own Bacopa monnieri extract is going to blow a majority of the competition right out of the water. In fact, we are using our bacopa in our new Sleep Support stack on our sister brand Natrium Health, and we had to lower the dosage to match the effects we were getting with our other extract. Do you want to experience the most potent Bacopa benefits? This is the extract for you!*
Bacopa monnieri is an herb that grows in marshy wetlands and tropical regions. It goes by many names, including brahmi, water hyssop, and herb of grace. Ayurvedic traditional remedies use bacopa to improve cognition, relieve stress, reduce inflammation, and enhance longevity. Modern research shows that Bacopa monnieri may be beneficial for boosting cognition, alleviating stress, reducing inflammation, and more.
Bacopa monnieri is rich in an antioxidant compound called bacosides. It may boost levels of other antioxidants as well, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and reduced glutathione (GSH). Researchers have hypothesized that the bacosides are responsible for much of the claims that bacopa can reduce stress, enhance longevity, and boost cognitive function. Bacosides protect against oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation occurs when oxidants steal electrons from the lipids in cell membranes, ultimately causing damage to the cell. Free radicals also cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and premature cellular aging.
Bacopa helps modulate the stress response and may minimize the intensity of perceived stressors. A human study found that bacopa exerts anxiolytic effects by reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Researchers also confirmed bacopa has adaptogenic properties and improves mood during periods of stress.
Taking Bacopa monnieri powder on an empty stomach may cause gastrointestinal side effects. These include nausea, bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Take bacopa supplements with food to mitigate these side effects. Individuals taking amitriptyline should consult with a physician before taking Bacopa monnieri supplements, as bacopa may enhance the bioavailability of this medication.
Overall, bacopa offers an impressive list of benefits for the body, mind, and emotions. While best known for supporting the mind and nervous system, bacopa also has a strong affinity for the lymph, blood, skin, and joints, as well as the circulatory and digestive systems. 5
For this reason, bacopa is often used to support meditation, increase clarity, and connect to a sense of spirit beyond just the physical realm. And because Ayurveda illuminates an intimate connection between the heart and the mind, bacopa also serves as a nourishing tonic for the heart.

While bacopa may not be common in every household garden, it can certainly be cultivated and grown to eat in a variety of ways. As long as it gets lots of water, it will grow well in most warm and humid climates.
As a plant that is nourishing and rejuvenating for the brain and nervous system, bacopa is generally considered safe and beneficial. Due to its bitter and cooling properties, it may aggravate vata if used in excess.
Bacopa is not recommended for those who are pregnant or nursing. If you are taking medications, we recommend speaking to your doctor or Ayurvedic practitioner before taking bacopa. Avoid this herb if there are known allergies to Bacopa monnieri or other members of the Figwort family. 21
Like many Ayurvedic herbs, bacopa can be used by healthy children above the age of two who occasionally need a little extra support. However, we always recommend working with a practitioner to determine whether bacopa is appropriate for your child.
Though the farm owner was originally skeptical about growing bacopa, when he saw the prolific growth of the plant within a few months, he was keen to continue growing and supplying this herb to Banyan.
Grown and harvested year-round, bacopa is gathered using a manual hand sickle technique and then dried out in the open air. At Banyan, we use the leaf of the plant. Once the leaves are fully dried, they are packaged in bags and outsourced from the farm to be milled into powder.
Luckily, bacopa is not in danger of overharvesting or extinction at this time. But as a part of the larger conversation regarding the sustainability of Ayurvedic herbs, it is important to understand where and how plants are grown and harvested.
Fill your beds, baskets, and containers with the charming, jewel-like flowers of bacopa. Plant bacopa in a sunny or partially sunny location that's protected from drying winds. This plant suffers in dry soil so water every day when summer temperatures soar. If allowed to dry out, bacopa will stop blooming and it will take a week or two for it to send out a new crop of flowers. Feed bacopa with a dilute solution of liquid fertilizer at 7 to ten day intervals. If you are growing bacopa in a moss or other type of hanging basket, soak the entire planter in a pail of water to hydrate the soil.
