For All Mankind Image

Together with the first look images, Wolpert and Nedivi also discussed how their alternate history show is starting to reflect recent events. While the Cold War was a distant event to younger generations who watch the series, the war in Ukraine reignited the political split between Russia and the United States. Besides that, the renewed faith in space exploration led to the launch of multiple private rocket launches in the last couple of years, which helps the new developments of the show look more credible. As Nedivi explains it:

For All Mankind image

Besides Apollo 11, the image commemorates the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009), as well as the 50th anniversary of the first robotic lunar landing by the Russian Luna 2 probe. Other countries to have launched spacecraft to the Moon include Japan, Europe, China and India; these probes are also featured in the image.

Indeed, Cernan long felt that he wanted to share not only the images, samples and data from the moon but also to stop time, reach out and bring the feeling of being on the surface of the moon back home, fully aware that few people would ever have that chance again. He recalled later:

The insignia was dominated by the image of Apollo, the Greek sun god. Suspended in space behind the head of Apollo was an American eagle of contemporary design, the red bars of the eagle's wing represented the bars in the U.S. flag; the three white stars symbolized the three astronaut crewmen. The background was deep blue space and within it were the Moon, the planet Saturn and a spiral galaxy or nebula. The Moon was partially overlaid by the eagle's wing suggesting that this was a celestial body that man has visited and in that sense conquered. The thrust of the eagle and the gaze of Apollo to the right and toward Saturn and the galaxy was meant to imply that man's goals in space would someday include the planets and perhaps the stars. The colors of the emblem were red, white and blue, the colors of the U.S. flag; with the addition of gold, to symbolize the golden age of space flight that would begin with this Apollo 17 lunar landing. The Apollo image used in this insignia was the Apollo of Belvedere sculpture that was in the Vatican Gallery in Rome. This emblem was designed by artist Robert T. McCall in collaboration with the astronauts.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

The plaque was covered with a thin sheet of stainless steel during flight. Astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit while astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander, and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot, explored the moon. The plaque says: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

2. Man is the image of God, and is therefore not only endowed with all the superior capacities which are the necessary qualifications of an image of the Most High, and bound in duty to develop them to the utmost extent; but he is also immortal in this respect, in quality of his being made in the image of his Creator.

These three dogmas are the sources of all human duties, as you will readily admit; and every one who lives according to these principles and their logical consequences is a good, pious, and honest man. But the peculiar duties which we have to perform as Jews, are comprised in our fourth principle. As God has chosen us to promulgate his divine will to all mankind, we are bound to adhere firmly to his word, to guard it with our life, to practise it amidst danger, to advocate it, though opposed by a whole world, and to teach it by acts and words wherever we live. We must adhere to our nation, because God has chosen the whole as his people, and maintain our distinct nationality in a religious respect all over the globe, until all mankind have received our sacred message.

I don't think I would have taken the time to notice the message of the advertisement if you all hadn't have kindly spelled it out to me. The image is not at all eye-catching. At first glance, all I saw was "group of people and objects" and didn't understand how any of it had to do with what men wanted since my attention hadn't been drawn to anything in particular.

The all mankind thing inadvertantly highlights what feminists have been saying forever about gendered language. 'Mankind' ignores women and this bunch (who will be gone in a year or two; the men's magazine market is shrinking in the UK and the lad's mag is passe now - men are turning to Men's Health and the likes now) just illustrate that deliberate ignorance. So in a way, thanks for proving the point... what's their name again? 041b061a72
